Happy Epiphany! Espero que les haya pasado un feliz día de los Reyes Magos ayer. In recognition of today’s special feast day, today’s sermon will be a bilingual one, and so I beseech your linguistic hospitality.
We’ve had a few newborns recently in the congregation, and had a baby shower, sprinkle or two, but I bet we didn’t see any gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh–although, I did meet a wiseman from the east last Sunday, but that was a grandpa.
Now, these gifts of the wise magi each had their own special meaning, but come on, you can tell they weren’t gifts from wise women, right? If so, they’d have in tow diapers, food, and wine-I mean formula, like las Compañeras.
Si fueron las reinas magas en vez de los reyes magos, no hubieron traído regalos de obsequios de oro, incienso y mirra, sino pañales y comida, ¿verdad? Como el evento que tuvimos ayer celebrando su llegada al niño Jesús, con tamales y pañales.
Este fin de semana celebramos el día de los Reyes Magos, cuando el niño Jesús recibe sus primeras visitas. Pero antes del día de los Reyes Magos, se celebra la Fiesta de los Inocentes. La Fiesta de los Santos Inocentes se celebró el 28 de diciembre para conmemorar la Masacre de los Inocentes en Belén cometida por Herodes. Este año, muchas familias están viviendo ese mismo infierno con más de 9.000 bebés y niños palestinos masacrados en Gaza. De media, el número de niños asesinados cada día en Gaza son alrededor de 160. Al igual que hace dos milenios, ningún lugar en esa región es seguro, y se utilizan bombas de 2.000 libras en zonas del sur de Gaza donde Israel había ordenado a los civiles que se trasladaron por motivos de seguridad, un tamaño de bomba que ya no se utiliza en zonas densamente pobladas.
Este año, los cristianos palestinos en Belén se reunieron para un servicio ecuménico en la Capilla de San Francisco en la Iglesia de la Natividad, que incluyó un corazón de madera de olivo para cada uno de los casi 9.000 niños masacrados en Gaza desde el inicio de la operación militar israelí.

Before we get to the light for the world that is Epiphany, we have to travel through the darkness that is the Holy Feast of Innocents. The Feast of Holy Innocents was celebrated on December 28th to commemorate the Massacre of the Innocents of Bethlehem by King Herod. While dubious from a strictly historical perspective, this year many are living its hellish reality with more than 9,000 Palestinian infants and children slaughtered in the ongoing genocide in Gaza. On average, the number of children being killed every day in the enclave “is well over 100,” a Doctors Without Borders doctor warns us. One UN report puts the number at 160. Much like two millennia ago, nowhere is safe, with 2,000-pound bombs being used in areas of southern Gaza where Israel had ordered civilians to move for safety–a size of bomb which is no longer used in densely populated areas.
This year, Palestinian Christians in Bethlehem gathered for an ecumenical service at St. Francis Chapel in the Church of the Nativity, which included an olive wood heart for each of the nearly 9,000 children slaughtered in Gaza since the inception of the Israeli military operation.
And yet, two thousand years ago the holy family survived and found refuge. While as many as 160 infants and children are slaughtered daily in Gaza, the World Health Organization reports that around 180 are still being born daily. Light still shines in the darkness. Epiphany.

Not only is this Epiphany Sunday, but it is also the first Sunday of 2024; yep, we once again find ourselves in a presidential election year.
Yesterday, also marked the third anniversary of the insurrection at the Capitol. Since that fateful day, many of the participants have been found guilty of seditious conspiracy, and yet the primary instigator remains a front-runner for this year’s election, echoing ethno-nationalist rhetoric of migrants “poisoning our blood”–the media is quick to associate this rhetoric with Nazism, which is true, but it too finds origins in American soil, from a time when White nationalist called America great.
2024 will be a year that we are told repeatedly over and over the old racist tropes that birds of a feather should only flock together. Our national political discourse will be vile and reminiscent of eras past, many wish forgotten.
In 2024, we are to again say “no” to fascism, ethno-nationalisms, and white supremacy, and know that we really are better together. And we know this because we live it. We say no to walls, we say no to enclaves. We say yes to bridges, we say yes to equitable integration.
No sólo es este domingo el domingo de Tres Reyes, sino que también es el primer domingo de 2024; una vez más nos encontramos en un año de elecciones presidenciales.
Ayer también se cumplió el tercer aniversario de la insurrección en el Capitolio. El instigador principal sigue diciendo tonterías como «los inmigrantes envenenan nuestra sangre.» Asociamos este lenguaje con el nazismo, pero también tiene sus orígenes en suelo estadounidense de una era no tan lejana.
El 2024 será un año en el que se nos repetirá una y otra vez los viejos tropos racistas de que los pájaros del mismo plumaje sólo deberían agruparse juntos. Nuestro discurso político nacional será detestable.
En el 2024, debemos volver a decir “no” al fascismo y a la supremacía blanca, y saber que realmente estamos mejor todos juntos. Y lo sabemos porque lo vivimos. Decimos no a los muros, decimos no al racismo. Decimos sí a los puentes, decimos sí a la integración equitativa.

In quite a counter narrative to what we will be peddled, this past week folks of different countries of origins, languages, and backgrounds came together to put on a mega-event for our community. Our Community Resilience teams composed of our Food Security, Vaccines & Community Empowerment, Financial Empowerment, and the Newcomer Navigation Teams, along with las Compañeras worked overtime to make more than 3,200 tamales to share with Cherryland. And many of you participated in the distribution yesterday. Some highlights were: Mateo’s and Ralph’s playlists--some selections got us more than whistling while we worked; Our Chinese food security team member, Tony actually winning the golden tamal award (don’t worry, you’ll have your chance to compete on Sunday February 4th, details forthcoming); and our Eden Church kiddos learning that it’s more precious to give than to receive; and of course, all the smiles on all the the faces of those receiving gifts and goodies for Tres Reyes.
La semana pasada, personas de diferentes países de origen e idiomas se reunieron para organizar un megaevento para nuestra comunidad. Nuestros equipos de resiliencia comunitaria junto con las Compañeras, trabajaron sobretiempo para hacer más de 3,200 tamales para repartir con Cherryland. Esta semana aprendimos juntos que es más valioso dar que recibir, y somos mejores cuando trabajamos juntos.
Multicultural work sometimes takes longer, like monolinguals waiting in translation, making space for others. Yet, it’s an honor to do so because we’re better together. Yes, the line took a little longer yesterday, but folks were helped in Spanish, English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Like the journey the Magi took from the East, it took a while, but the party for Jesus’ birth didn’t really begin until a caravan of migrant magi from the farthest of lands reached the light that darkness did not overcome.
El trabajo multicultural a veces lleva más tiempo, como los monolingües que esperan una traducción, dejando espacio para los demás. Sin embargo, es un honor hacerlo porque estamos mejor juntos. Sí, la fila tomó un poco más de tiempo ayer, pero la gente recibió ayuda en español, inglés, mandarín y cantonés. Al igual que el viaje que hicieron los Magos desde Oriente, tomó un tiempo, pero la fiesta por el nacimiento de Jesús no comenzó realmente hasta que una caravana de magos migrantes de las tierras más lejanas alcanzaron la luz que la oscuridad no venció.

Finally, we want you to know that you are part of the magic that is Tres Reyes, you are an ingredient to making this Church work, and shine within the community, so see me during fellowship time to receive your tamales. And be on the lookout for an upcoming announcement regarding a special fellowship time for Candlemas when we will make them and eat them together. ‘Cuz it’s better together. And don’t you worry, I already know who got the baby Jesus from the King’s Cake. Amen.
