texts & contexts: Wisdom & Theodicy

The Ancients are regarded to be holders of a wealth of wisdom. The Bible, an ancient product, is no different. Distinct from covenantal theology, wisdom was from its inception a very international enterprise, greatly influenced by the phenomena of migration. We will examine some of the biblical books that fit the so-called Wisdom tradition: Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Ben Sira, Wisdom of Solomon, and James. We will also explore Egyptian and Sumerian works of Wisdom. We will explore how the differing biblical traditions approached the philosophical inquiries of the meaning of life as well as theodicy. We will attempt to locate each strand’s sitz im leben or social and historical contexts behind our texts, with the objective to better imagine what gave rise to differing answers, to challenge our own thinking about life and theodicy, and to better understand the thinking of others within our contemporary context.

Textos y contextos: Sabiduría y Teodicea

Se considera que los Antiguos poseen una gran riqueza de sabiduría. La Biblia, un producto antiguo, no es diferente. A diferencia de la teología del pacto, la sabiduría fue desde sus inicios una empresa muy internacional, muy influenciada por los fenómenos de la migración. Examinaremos algunos de los libros bíblicos que encajan en la llamada tradición de la Sabiduría: Proverbios, Job, Eclesiastés, Sirácida, Sabiduría de Salomón y Santiago. También exploramos las obras de sabiduría egipcias y sumerias. Exploramos cómo las diferentes tradiciones bíblicas abordaron las investigaciones filosóficas sobre el significado de la vida y la teodicea. Intentaremos localizar el contexto social e histórico de cada corriente detrás de nuestros textos, con el objetivo de imaginar mejor qué dio lugar a diferentes respuestas, desafiar nuestro propio pensamiento sobre la vida y la teodicea, y comprender mejor el pensamiento de los demás dentro de nuestro contexto contemporáneo.

texts & contexts: Bible & Migration

The Bible depicts a variety of migratory experiences: individual and collective, voluntary and involuntary–we’ll unpack that a bit later. The motif of migration begins in the Hebrew Bible with the exile from the Garden of Eden and continues to travel throughout the Torah in the experiences of Abraham, Joseph, Moses and the Hebrews, and endures throughout the entirety of the canon, culminating in realized and imagined return migrations. Indeed, one could say that migration is one of the central motifs of the Hebrew Bible, as it is with the human experience writ large. Most would opine that, along with climate change, migration is one of the most pressing humanitarian issues in the 21st century.” This course will examine migration in the Bible and the social and historical contexts both behind and in front of our texts, with the objective to understand ourselves and those around us and before us a little bit better.

Textos y contextos: la biblia y migración

La Biblia describe una variedad de experiencias migratorias: individuales y colectivas, voluntarias e involuntarias–lo analizaremos un poco más adelante. El tema de la migración comienza en la Biblia Hebrea con el exilio del Jardín del Edén y continúa viajando a lo largo de la Torá en las experiencias de Abraham, José, Moisés y los Hebreos, y perdura a lo largo de todo el canon, culminando en las migraciones de retorno imaginadas y reales. De hecho, se podría decir que la migración es uno de los temas centrales de la Biblia Hebrea, como lo es también de la experiencia humana en general. La mayoría opinaría que, junto con el cambio climático, la migración es uno de los asuntos humanitarios más apremiantes del siglo XXI”. Este curso examinará la migración en la Biblia y los contextos sociales e históricos tanto detrás como delante de nuestros textos, con el objetivo de comprendernos un poco mejor a nosotros mismos y a quienes nos rodean y los que venían antes de nosotros.
