The context of this Scripture is described in terms of the Jewish tradition. Jesus rebuked the scribes and Pharisees who used to boast their spirituality and righteous deeds. He told them not to be like the hypocrites who like to be praised by others.
The word hypocrites in the ancient Greek context was used to call a theatrical actor; a figurative two-faced person; a pretender. In ancient times, this was a person who put on a mask and pretended to be someone he was not.
In our current culture, the context is quite different. We don't usually pray at the street corners nor fast as often as in the Jewish tradition. Even charity practices are common in the social justice world and the IRS. Nowadays, we live in an increasingly digital culture with a tendency to brag on social media, posting selected pictures, places, and sometimes our best smile to call others' attention and win as many likes to feel acceptance and appreciation in a fragmented world.
A report by the Pew Research Center has looked into what teenagers are posting about on social media, confirming a common prejudice about social networks being a place to brag and boast above anything else. More than 40% of 743 teens ages 13-17 post about accomplishments, family, emotions, and feelings. Teenagers were the sample for this study, but even adults are immersed in these practices.
People from all generations are craving acceptance and appreciation in an individualistic world driven by capitalism, and social media is a good place to meet this human need, even if it is a fleeting feeling.
Friends, we were created to live in community. Arrogance and lack of authenticity prevent us from partaking in the abundant life Jesus wants for us. Sense of real belonging is essential for human development, and we can choose to live authentically or pretending.

Jesus's intention is that together we can build a world of more equality that reflects the kingdom's treasure.
In this Scripture, Jesus also encourages us not to store up treasures on earth. For whatever we make, our treasure gains possession of our hearts; we set our affections upon it.
For Christian Scriptures, the heart is more than a vital organ. Rather, it refers to an intangible composition of our soul that is the seat of life, where the deepest feelings of our being are housed.
Let me ask the million-dollar question, where is your heart these days? What are you putting in all your attention, effort, and emotions? For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.
Treasure is anything we value above all else and that which motivates us to action. For some it is money. For others it is power. Still other people strive for fame or attention. There are many things in this world vying for control of our hearts, as this is the control center for life. This world in its present form is passing away. The moment we take our last breath, earthly treasure won't matter anymore.
Today is Ash Wednesday. This day reminds us of human fragility, our mortality. We are passing through this world. Our social media posts will die with us, but the impact we leave on others when we live with authenticity will remain as a treasure in others' hearts
El contexto de esta Escritura se describe en términos de la tradición judía. Jesús reprendió a los escribas y fariseos que solían jactarse de su espiritualidad y sus buenas obras. Les dijo que no fueran como los hipócritas que buscan ser alabados por otros.
La palabra hipócritas en el contexto griego antiguo se usaba para llamar a un actor teatral; una persona figurativa de dos caras; un pretendiente En la antigüedad, esta era una persona que se ponía una máscara y pretendía ser alguien que no era.
En nuestra cultura actual, el contexto es bastante diferente. No solemos rezar en las esquinas de las calles ni ayunar con tanta frecuencia como en la tradición judía. Hoy en día, vivimos en una cultura cada vez más digital con una tendencia a presumir en las redes sociales, publicando imágenes seleccionadas, lugares y, a veces, nuestra mejor sonrisa para llamar la atención de los demás y ganar la mayor cantidad de "me gusta" para sentir aceptación y aprecio en un mundo fragmentado.
Un informe del Centro de Investigación Pew analizó lo que publican los adolescentes en las redes sociales, lo que confirma un prejuicio común acerca de que las redes sociales son un lugar para presumir y jactarse por encima de cualquier otra cosa. Más del 4% de 743 adolescentes de 13 a 17 años publican sobre logros, familia, emociones y sentimientos. Los adolescentes fueron la muestra para este estudio, pero incluso los adultos están inmersos en estas prácticas.
Personas de todas las generaciones anhelan aceptación y aprecio en un mundo individualista impulsado por el capitalismo, y las redes sociales son un buen lugar para satisfacer esta necesidad humana, incluso si es un sentimiento fugaz.
Amigos, fuimos creados para vivir en comunidad. La arrogancia y la falta de autenticidad nos impiden participar de la vida abundante que Jesús quiere para nosotros. El sentido de pertenencia real es fundamental para el desarrollo humano, y podemos optar por vivir auténtico o fingiendo.

La intención de Jesús es que juntos podamos construir un mundo de más igualdad que refleje el tesoro del reino.
En esta Escritura, Jesús también nos anima a no acumular tesoros en la tierra. Porque hagamos lo que hagamos, nuestro tesoro se apodera de nuestro corazón; ponemos nuestros afectos en él.
Para las Escrituras cristianas, el corazón es más que un órgano vital. Más bien se refiere a una composición intangible de nuestra alma que es el asiento de la vida, donde se albergan los sentimientos más profundos de nuestro ser.
Déjame hacerte la pregunta del millón de dólares, ¿dónde está tu corazón estos días? ¿En qué estás poniendo toda tu atención, esfuerzo y emociones? Porque donde esté vuestro tesoro, allí estará también vuestro corazón.
El tesoro es cualquier cosa que valoramos por encima de todo y que nos motiva a la acción. Para algunos es dinero. Para otros es poder. Aún otras personas luchan por la fama o la atención. Hay muchas cosas en este mundo compitiendo por el control de nuestros corazones, ya que este es el centro de control de la vida. Este mundo en su forma actual está pasando. En el momento en que respiramos por última vez, el tesoro terrenal ya no importará.
Hoy es Miércoles de Ceniza. Este día nos recuerda la fragilidad humana, nuestra mortalidad. Estamos de paso por este mundo. Nuestras publicaciones en las redes sociales morirán con nosotros, pero el impacto que dejamos en los demás cuando vivimos con autenticidad permanecerá como un tesoro en los corazones de los demás.
