2020.02.02 | Revolutionary Spirit

Good morning! I thank God for the opportunity to be here sharing with you all. When I decided to pursue a career in the Ministry, I never imagined I’d have the honor to serve as Minister in training at Eden United Church of Christ. I bring greetings from my home Church “La Comunidad Cristiana de Esperanza in Mexico City”. Today I am going to share my third sermon since I moved to CA in the fall of 2018.

¡Buenos dias! Doy gracias a Dios por la oportunidad de estar aqui compartiendo con todos ustedes. Cuando decidí seguir la carrera Ministerial, nunca me imagine tener el honor de servir como Ministro en entrenamiento en Eden, la Inglesia Unida de Cristo. Les traigo saludos de mi iglesia local en la Ciudad de Mexico, “La Comunidad Cristiana de Esperanza” . El dia de hoy voy a compartir mi tercer sermon desde que me mude a CA en el verano de 2018.

In some parts of the world, the Christian tradition celebrates “Candlemas Day”, where there is a remembrance of the presentation of baby Jesus in the temple.

To start, I would like to share a little about the Candlemas celebration in my hometown. For those of you that don’t know, I was born and raised in Mexico City. According to historian Arturo Cardoso, in times of the Viceroyalty, (1535-1821) Candlemas coincided with the Mexican celebration at the beginning of planting season, in which they bless the corn seeds to guarantee a good harvest. The main dish in this celebration was tamales made with cornmeal. Anthropologist Katia Perdigon asserts, a custom was established during the times of Viceroyalty, in which people went to church yearly on February 2nd to give thanks to baby Jesus for bringing light to the hearts of humanity.

En algunos lugares del mundo, la tradición Cristiana celebra “El dia de la Candelaria”, donde se recuerda la presentación del niño Jesús en el Templo a los 40 días de nacido. 

Para empezar me gustaría compartir un poco sobre la tradicional fiesta del 2 de febrero en mi ciudad natal, para los que no saben, naci y creci en la CDMX. Según el historiador Arturo Cardoso, en la época del Virreinato, (1535-1821) la fiesta de la candelaria coincidió con la celebración Mexica del inicio de temporada de siembra. Según sus costumbres, los Mexicas  llevaban a bendecir la semilla de maíz que sembraban, lo que les garantizaría una buena cosecha. El platillo principal de esta fiesta eran los tamales que se hacían del producto del maíz. La Antropologa Katia Perdigon afirma, desde la época del Virreinato se quedó como costumbre acudir a la iglesia cada 2 de febrero para agradecer que el niño Dios trajera luz a los corazones de la humanidad. 

Personally, I am the kind of person that likes to understand the origin and meaning of traditions. My Mexican culture is rich in traditions, which is a product of mixed indigenous practices and Spanish influence. 

Let’s go back to the Scripture and analyze the story told /narrated by the Gospel together. This is the scene: Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus in the temple of Jerusalem offering a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons according to their economic status to fulfill the Law of Moises. Ana and Simeon were also there, two prophets who recognized baby Jesus as the Messiah. They proclaimed salvation through him. 

What struck my attention is that it was the third time in the story of baby Jesus that the presence of the Holy Spirit is explicitly mentioned in the book of Luke. Verse 25 says: The Holy Spirit was resting on Simeon. 

The first time that the Holy Spirit is mentioned is when Mary visited Elizabeth, Luke Chapter 1, Verse 41 says, “when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” The second time is when the shepherds were visited by an angel of God who announces the birth of the Savior, Luke Chapter 2, Verse 9 says, “the glory of the Lord shone around them.” And the third time is found in verse 25, “the Holy Spirit rested on Simeon”. 

Personalmente soy de esas personas que me gusta entender el origen y significado de las tradiciones. Mi cultura Mexicana es una cultura rica en tradiciones producto de  una mezcla de las prácticas y tradiciones indígenas con la presencia colonial española. 

Regresemos a la escritura y analicemos juntos la historia que narra el Evangelio, esta es la escena:  Maria y Jose con el niño Jesús en el templo de Jerusalén, ofreciendo un par de tórtolas, o dos palominos confirme a su estatus económico para cumplir con la Ley de Moisés.  Allí también estaba Ana y Simeón, dos profetas que reconocieron que el niño Jesús era el Mesías y  proclamaron la salvación de Dios a través de él.  

Lo que me llama la atención que es la tercera vez que el en la historia del niño Jesús que se menciona explícitamente la presencia del Espíritu Santo. Dice en el versículo 25,  el Espíritu Santo estaba sobre Simeon.

La primera vez que menciona la presencia del Espíritu Santo es cuando María estando embarazada del niño Jesus visita a Elizabeth, Lucas 1:41 dice que  cuando Elizabeth escuchó el saludo de María, la criatura saltó en su vientre; y fue llena del Espíritu Santo. La segunda vez es cuando los Magos son visitados por un ángel de Dios que les anuncia el nacimiento del Salvador, Lucas 2:9 dice: y la gloria del Señor los rodeó de resplandor. Y ahora por tercera vez, el versículo 25 dice el Espíritu Santo estaba sobre Simeon. 

The interesting thing happened immediately after each person had an encounter with baby Jesus. Can you see that something supernatural happens when people are filled by the Holy Spirit? There is a human response that causes a revolution within our being. Let me go back to our three examples: When Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit, the bible states she hosted Mary for three months in her house, avoiding a scandal because she was pregnant without being married. The shepherds traveled to Bethlehem to see baby Jesus who was born in a manger in very poor conditions and they gave him gifts including gold, recognizing him as King. In the case of Simeon, he was filled with the Holy Spirit, went to the temple, took Baby Jesus in his arms and prophesied that the salvation of God through Jesus would be for everyone, in other words, gentiles were included. 

Lo interesante sucede justo después de que cada persona tiene un encuentro con el niño Jesús,  ¿puedes ver que algo sobrenatural/sobrehumano pasa cuando las personas son llenas del Espiritu Santo?, hay una respuesta humana que causa una revolución en nuestro entorno.  Déjame regresar a nuestros tres ejemplos, cuando Elizabeth es llena del Espíritu Santo dice la escritura que hospedó a Maria durante tres meses en su casa evitando el escándalo de que la gente supiera que estaba embarazada.  Los Magos viajaron a Belén para ver al niño Jesús que había nacido en un pesebre, en las condiciones más pobres y le llevaron regalos, entre ellos oro reconociendolo como Rey. En el caso de Simeon, fue  lleno del Espíritu Santo, vino al templo, tomó al niño en sus brazos y profetizó que  la salvación de Dios a través de Jesús sería para todos los pueblos, es decir, los gentiles estábamos siendo incluidos. 

I don’t want to forget the origin and meaning of our traditions. In this narrative something supernatural happens when the Glory of God is present. Let me say it this way: The Revolutionary Spirit of God drives us to do things we would not do easily at our own will. Have you ever wondered how the impulses of the Holy Spirit move in your life? In the three examples I mentioned, the impulses of the Spirit of God manifest in a form of solidarity amongst the rejected. Elizabeth stands in solidarity with Mary and hosts her in her house. During those times, Mary could have been stoned to death for being pregnant outside of marriage. The impulses of the Spirit of God are also manifested in the form of charity towards the poor--the shepherds took gold to Baby Jesus, who was born in impoverished conditions. These revolutionary impulses are also manifested by dignifying those who have been belittled because of their racial or ethnic background. Simeon prophesied salvation for gentiles, a community that according to Jewish tradition, were not worthy of the favor of God.  

No quiero olvidar el origen y significado de nuestras tradiciones. En esta narativa, algo sobrenatural pasa cuando la gloria de Dios esta presente.  Déjame decirlo de esta forma: El Espíritu Revolucionario de Dios nos impulsa a hacer cosas que no haríamos en nuestra propia voluntad. Alguna vez te has preguntado cómo son los impulsos del Espíritu de Dios en tu vida? En los tres ejemplos que mencioné, los impulsos del Espíritu de Dios se manifiestan en forma de solidaridad con los rechazados, Elizabeth se solidariza con María hospedandola en su casa,  en esa época María pudo haber sido lapidada por estar embarazada sin haberse casado. Los impulsos del Espíritu de Dios también se manifiestan en forma de caridad hacia los pobres, los Magos llevaron oro al niño Jesús quien había nacido en condiciones de pobreza. Estos impulsos revolucionarios también se manifiestan dignificando a aquellos que han sido menospreciados por su raza o etnia. Simeon profetizó salvación para los gentiles, un pueblo que según la tradición Judía, no era digno de la salvacion de Dios.   

In this passage we see baby Jesus at 40 days old surrounded by people full of the Holy Spirit. The Gospels don’t say much about the childhood of Jesus, the book of Luke mentioned that the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

There was the redeemer they had waited on for many years, the Messiah who would free them from the Roman yoke and would restore the kingdom of Israel. The son of God who came to earth to save us through his human example, a life style driven by the same revolutionary Spirit who transformed the situation of Mary, the financial condition of baby Jesus through the shepherds gifts, and brought hope to the Gentiles through Simeon’s prophecy.

There is a quote from the famous hero of the Cuban Revolution, Ernesto Che Guevara, that says “The true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love.” In that sense, Jesus was the incarnation of the Revolutionary Spirit of God who taught us that salvation is about acts of love and justice towards our neighbors.

En este pasaje vemos al niño Jesús, quien a los 40 días de nacido estuvo rodeado de personas llenas del Espíritu Santo.  Los evangelios no hablan mucho de la niñez de Jesús, el Evangelio de Lucas dice que el niño crecía y se fortalecía, y se llenaba de sabiduría. 

Alli estaba el redentor que la gente había esperado por muchos años, el Mesías que los liberaría del yugo romano y restauría el reino de Israel. El hijo de Dios que vino a la tierra para salvarnos a través de su ejemplo humano, un estilo de vida impulsada por el mismo Espíritu revolucionario que transformó las situación al rededor de Maria & Elizabeth, de Jesús con la visita de los magos, así como la de los gentiles a través de la profecía de Simeon. 

Hay una frase del famoso héroe de la Revolución Cubana, Ernesto Che Guevara que dice: “El verdadero revolucionario está guiado por grandes sentimientos de amor.” En ese sentido, Jesús fue la encarnación del Espíritu Revolucionario de Dios que nos enseñó que la salvación tiene que ver con nuestros actos de amor y justicia hacia el prójimo.

Let me ask this question again? Have you ever felt impulses from the Revolutionary Spirit of God that urge you to work for justice for others? I want to share a little about my testimony. 

In January 2018, that revolutionary Spirit of God, spoke to my heart. I had been serving in my free time at the only Open and Affirming Church in Mexico City, while developing my career as an Actuary in the financial industry. When I turned 30, my life seemed stable according to economic and social standards. But years later a strong impulse of love led me to give up the world of finances and follow what I call, the revolutionary example of Jesus. Have you ever thought how revolutionary it is to get out of the center and work for justice for others? I didn’t know until I stopped resisting the impulses of love and compassion. Now, I understand that it is not about me. I thank God for having found this beloved community called Eden where I am able to offer my gifts at the service of God and work together for the justice of all those who continue living on the margins.

¿Déjame hacer la pregunta otra vez? ¿Alguna vez has sentido impulsos del Espíritu Revolucionario de Dios que te impulsan a trabajar por la justicia para para otros? Quisiera compartirles un poco sobre mi testimonio. 

En Enero de 2018, el Espíritu revolucionario de Dios habló a mi corazón, yo había estado sirviendo en mis tiempos libres en única Iglesia Incluyente en la CDMX que ministra a la comunidad LGBTQ+, al mismo tiempo desarrollaba mi carrera como Actuario en la industria financiera. Cuando cumpli 30 años mi vida era estable según los estándares económicos y sociales. Pero años más tarde ese impulso de amor me llevó a renunciar al mundo de las finanzas y a seguir lo que yo llamo, el ejemplo revolucionario de Jesús. ¿Alguna vez has pensado cuán revolucionario es quitarse del centro y trabajar por la justicia para los demás? Yo no lo sabía, hasta que deje de resistirme a los impulsos de amor y compasión y entendí que no se trata de mi. Doy gracias a Dios por haber encontrado esta hermosa comunidad llamada Eden donde puedo poner mis dones al servicio de Dios y trabajar juntos por la justicia de todos aquellos que siguen viviendo en los márgenes. 

I have seen the Revolutionary Spirit of God working through the people of this church. Do you know what? I don’t want to pursue financial success in this world as I did before. I want to be part of a beloved community who works for justice for everybody no matter the academic level, race, the skills to speak more than one language, nationality, migratory status or any other category who divided us. 

Today I invite you to celebrate Candlemas, being aware that the reason for this celebration is Jesus, whose Revolutionary Spirit drives us to work together for the justice of all people in our community. It is time to center the margins and that is our responsibility. Amen. 

He visto al Espíritu revolucionario de Dios trabajando a través de la gente de esta iglesia. ¿Sabes que? No quiero perseguir el éxito financiero en este mundo como lo hice antes. Quiero ser parte de una comunidad de amor que trabaja por la justicia para todos, sin importar el nivel académico, o la raza, tampoco la habilidad para hablar más de un idioma, nacionalidad, estatus migratorio o cualquier otra categoría que nos divida.

Hoy te invito a que celebres el dia de la candelaria siendo consciente de que la razón de esta celebración es Jesús, cuyo Espíritu Revolucionario nos impulsa a trabajar juntos por la justicia para toda la gente de nuestra comunidad. Es momento de centrar los márgenes y esa es nuestra responsabilidad. Amen.
